We have seen what the effects would be with the deforestation of much of Brazil over the last twenty years with the increase in carbon dioxide. Forests act as the lungs of the planet. Forests contribute about 25% of the oxygen in the earths atmosphere and remove much of the carbon dioxide.

The results could be catastrophic for the fauna throughout the world. It would result in many deaths throughout the entire animal kingdom, with many species becoming extinct and the remaining numbers of species and individuals being vastly reduced.

What will happen if forests disappear?

Many animals who make their homes in the forests will also disappear, and so will the animals who feed on these animals. This devastation will travel all the way up the food chain. Trees produce most of our oxygen, also, so we would not have enough to breathe. In addition, our source for lumber will disappear.

When will all the rain forests disappear?

It is unlikely that all the forests will ever be gone. Much of the world is covered with forests, and even though some of these have been over-harvested, in many countries there are requirements for replanting trees after logging. The forests continue to grow and to renew themselves as well.

What does logging lead to?

Logging leads to deforestation, quite simply our forests disappear in time. If the forests are sparse or disappear all together in an area, then the animals in the area that lost their natural habitat will either die off or migrate to another area. Adaptation may occur in some cases, but is not likely.
