Is your 'check engine' light on? The tranny probably isn't 'stuck in low' but rather placed in failsafe by the computer, which is second gear. There are many problems which will cause the computer to take this action. Ask around among your friends and find one who has a code reader & scan the computer for trouble codes. The above answer only applies if you have a 4 speed auto trans. If you have a 3 speed than you have a internal trans failure, since the 3 speed is not computer controlled, but hydraulic.
there is no dip stick its a bolt on the bottom of the tranny

Changing the dip stick shouldn't cause a leak, although changing the dipstick tube might cause a small leak for a minute or two. be careful of the rubber O RING on either the bottom of the filler tube or the transmission if you're changing the tube
