How many minke whales are killed?

There is a general moratorium on hunting whales that has been effective since 1986. But some countries either have ignored it, or claim to hunt whales for scientific purposes, or grounds, a loophole in the regulations. This is seen by many as nothing more than a cover for commerical whaling. Some of the biggest offenders are, Norway followed the moratorium, then registered an objection with the IWC (International Whaling Commission) and resumed hunting in 1993, while Iceland went back to hunting "for science" in August 2003. Japan never really followed the moratorium, claiming to "hunt on scientific grounds". The catch has been on the increase with the added countries hunting, in these last years. Japan took 540 Minke Whales yearly, but has said they were increasing their catch to 840 yearly as of 2005 (for scientific purposes). In 2005 Norwegian whalers caught 639 Minke Whales. In 2006 a total of 546 whales were caught by Norwegian whalers. Iceland whalers have caught an average of 250 yearly. The average total of all the whalers, (including Japan, Iceland, and Norway) current take yearly of Minke Whales is about 1700 animals. For more details, please see sites listed below.
