The second season mainly focuses on the arrival of Elena's doppelgänger Katherine Pierce and the reasons she returned to Mystic Falls. The second season also introduces werewolves. Tyler's Uncle, Mason Lockwood, a werewolf, arrives in the town after the death of his brother, Tyler's father, and tells Tyler about the so called "Lockwood curse" that has run in their family for centuries. He tells Tyler that in order to activate the curse, more specifically to activate the "werewolf" gene, the person must kill someone. Katherine turns Caroline into a vampire so she can have a spy against Stefan and Elena, using Matt to scare Caroline into helping her. Caroline later tells Elena. Tyler accidentally kills an innocent girl after Katherine compelled her to make him angry. Katherine's main reason for returning to Mystic Falls was to find the moonstone, with the help of Mason, who is later killed by Damon. Katherine falls back on Plan B and calls in a favour from a witch to help her get the stone back from Stefan and Damon. The witch casts a spell on Elena and Katherine, meaning that when Katherine is hurt, it also affects Elena. When the witch finds out another Bennett is at the party and Katherine had deceived her, she puts a spell on the moonstone, injuring Katherine. Damon then leaves her in the original tomb, where he believes she belongs. She tells him the reason she hasn't killed Elena is because she has to protect her and she's in danger. Damon ignores her and leaves her screaming and crying in the tomb. Elena is later kidnapped, meaning Katherine was telling him the truth.

It is revealed that Elena isn't the only Petrova doppelgänger, but Katherine too, and maybe others. Elena needs to be sacrificed to break the sun and the moon curse, but she is rescued by Stefan and Damon. Klaus, the oldest vampire in history, is now hunting for her. Klaus wants to break the curse before the werewolves can do so.

In season 2, Klaus, Katherine, Damon, Stefan, Elena and other vampires are searching and fighting for the moonstone.Klaus is looking for it to complete a ritual and in order to do this, he needs, elena (doppelganger blood) and a vampire. Few people will find out about the supernatural world and caroline will be helping tyelr Lockwood through his wolf transformation every full moon. This will draw them closer and share a bond. jeremy is beginning to see some of the dead people that nio one else can see. During the ritual, Klaus must drink Elena's blood which must kill her. But they find a way to make her survive the process.

I am so Team Delena. They are the perfect couple, but I do agree that Damon still has to try harder if he wants Elena but one way or another Elena will relize that she loves him. But I think that Stefen has more fealings for Kathrine than he says he does, why eles would he go for Elena besides the fact that she looks like Kathrine. I'm guessing that when he looks at Elena he thinks of Kathrine and how much he still loves her. And when and if Stefen realizes that he still loves Kathrine and dumps Elena, like Damon said in episode 21 when she needs a frend to talk to he'll be there for her. PS. I heard that Kathrine tells Stefen that she came back to Mystic Falls for him and when he rejects her ,she stakes him. Also, Kathrine come face to face with Damon and tells him that she never loved him, and this is after they were making out in the boarding house. And Kathrine comes face to face with some one else and says, " We haven't officially met, I'm Kathrine." I'm not sure who but im guessing Elena. Well I hope you enjoyed my spoilers. :) PPS I can't wait for the next season!
