Why don't the British leave Northern Ireland?

Ireland was part of the "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland" from 1801. When the Irish Free state was formed in 1922 Northern Ireland (6 out of the 9 counties of Ulster) which had a majority Protestant population was given the option to leave the Free State and remain part of the UK. The Free State came into being on December 6th and for two days Northern Ireland was part of the Free State, it exercised it's option and rejoined the UK, the new title was then the "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland".

Does Ireland want Northern Ireland?

There are many people on the island of Ireland that wish to see Ireland united into one country but there is no direct territorial claim over Northern Ireland by the state.Ireland dropped its constitutional claim to Northern Ireland in 1998 by an overwhelming majority in a referendum on the subject, which came into force on December 2nd, 1999.The Good Friday Agreement (or Belfast Agreement) saw the Irish government agree to submit articles 2 and 3 of the constitution, Bunreacht na hÉireann, to amendment by referendum by all the voters of Ireland. The 19th Amendment gives the right of all people born on the island of Ireland to citizenship of the republic of Ireland. Previously this was an automatic right only of people born in the republic. It redefined the nation of Ireland to be a community of individuals of common identity, not a territory and committed to a united Ireland in terms of a union of people rather than a single country. It does, however, leave the door open for a united Ireland by consent of the people of both jurisdictions and actually expresses a wish for this to happen.
