A physical change simply alters the shape, size, color and physical state (solid, liquid, gas, plasma state) of a material. Melting ice, boiling water, freezing water, mixing sulphur with iron filings, and even tearing paper will produce physical change. Composition of a substance remains unchanged in case of a physical change.

A chemical change involves the breaking of old bonds and the creation of new bonds that hold particles (atoms, molecules) together. In this, a new substance is formed. Rusting of an iron, the formation of white ash of MgO when magnesium wire burns are examples of chemical change.

A physical change can be reversed by using physical processes such as evaporation, crystallization, distillation, etc; whereas a chemical change can't be reversed using physical processes.

Why the melting point of a substance is a physical property but flammability is a chemical property?

When a substance melts, it changes state from solid to liquid. This does not alter the substance's chemical composition, so melting point is a physical property. Flammability means burning, and when a substance burns, it reacts with oxygen to produce a new substance that was not there before. This is therefore a chemical property.

Does distillation produce chemical change or a physical change?

physical change because part changes to a liquid or solid, while another part changes to a gas - however the substance is only changing state, so it would be a physical change

Are physical and chemical change different?

Physical change does not produce a new substance. Chemical change produces a new substanceIn a chemical change the atoms/molecules are chemically joined together so they are very hard to separate. were as they are easyer to separate in a physical change

Is apple cider becoming vinegar physical or chemical?

it is a physical change because no reaction occurs and there is no new substance. :)

What are the physical and chemical state of matter?

A physical change is a change in matter that involves no chemical reaction. When a substance undergoes a physical change, the composition of its molecules remains unchanged, and the substance does not lose its chemical identity. Melting, evaporating, and freezing are three types of physical change. For example, water (H2O) is a liquid that freezes to form the solid ice, which may again be melted into water. Because molecules of water and ice are composed of the same chemical elements in the same proportions, the change from water to ice is a physical change. Physical changes include any alteration in the shape and size of a substance. For example cutting, grinding, crushing, annealing, dissolving, or emulsifying produce physical changes. Still another physical change is sublimation, the change from a solid to a gas.CHEMICAL CHANGE: When a substance undergoes a chemical change, the composition of its molecules changes. The properties of the original substance are lost, and new substances with new properties are produced. An example of a chemical change is the production of rust (iron oxide) when oxygen in the air reacts with iron. Chemical changes may also result in physical changes. For example, when wood (a solid) is burned, it is combined with oxygen gas to produce gaseous carbon dioxide (CO2), liquid water, and solid carbon.

What is the diffence between a physical and chemical change?

Physical change doesn't produce a new substance, but a chemical change is a new substance.

A synthesis reaction

Is crushing of sodium carbonate chemical change?

No, crushing sodium carbonate does not produce a new chemical substance. Thus, crushing is an example of a physical change.

Is mixing oil and vinegar a physical or chemical reaction?

Physical. Anything that can be separated by physical means is a physical change, and you can separate oil from vinegar by skimming it off the top. You are also not making a new substance. In order to have a chemical reaction occur you must produce a new substance, not just a mixture. For example, vinegar and baking soda will produce carbon dioxide gas.

Is lighting a candle a physical or a chemical change?

It is chemica changel because it produces gas and the smoke it produce is one of the evidence that it is really a chemical change, also you can't put it back to its beginning state.
