About the same as the future of some religions.
Answer:
Atheism tracks well with the level of education and social programs in most countries.
Most countries which have a high general level of education and programs such as health care and social suppoert (the Scandinavian countries and most of Europe) have secular societies and high levels of atheism or agnostic belief. This parallels science's ability to explain the events of the world and medicines ability to affect cures without recourse to supernatural explanations. In adddition popular entertainment often ofers the same effeects as religion (miraculous changes, magic tricks, psychic power demonstrations) so that people diregard the veracity of many miracles.
Modern society has an emphasis on self actualization - the old "do as I say and don't think" rules of organized religion increasingly falls out of fashion, in addition to this the scandals associated with many churches (abuse cases, money mismanagement, and aspiring to political interference) erodes the moral authority to make such pronuncements.
All in all the future of atheism is positive.
