As children grow up into adulthood they learn to make decisions for themselves. Sometimes these may be in accord with their parents wishes and sometimes not. If the parents want the child to do something wrong then they of course should not follow this. However, if they did, even if it was following a bad example, the children would not be blamed, when they are young, for following such.
The important thing is that the child be given all the information on which to make an informed choice when they are able. In the Christian context this is why Christian parents tell their children all they know about Jesus Christ. In this case, the child will at some point decide for themselves who to follow. In this situation, if they accepted Jesus for themselves, they would not then be following their parents anymore but Jesus, although usually for a time they would be under the instruction of their parents and other Christians.
