It depends partly on what the walls are made of. Books are very heavy, so shelves must be strong. I prefer to drill into the wall (preferably where studs are in a wallboard wall) and insert 3" long dowels to fit matching holes in the back of the shelves, then after inserting the shelves, fit one or two wood supports ( matching the shelves) onto the front of the shelves.
