There has been two 'world wars'. World War 1 from 1914 until 1918 (known at the time as The Great War) which the USA joined as one of the Allies in April 1917. World War 2 ran from 1 September 1939 until 2 September 1945 and the US joined as one of the Allies on 8 December 1941. The result of both of these wars was an Allied victory.
