A friar is a member in the Catholic Christianity church. The friars are split up into four great orders. The Dominicans, Franciscans, Carmelites, and the Augustinians. The friars are told to live by obedience and strict discipline along with peace and abstinence.

Catholic AnswerA friar is a form of address used for a brother. Since the thirteenth century, however, the term has come to mean the member of a mendicant Order, mainly the Franciscans and Dominicans, as opposed to a monk. A Friar's work is outside of a monastery, whereas a monk is primarily identified with his monastery. Thus friars were primarily engaged in preaching, teaching, etc.

What is the female version of a friar?

There is no feminine form of Friar. Friar comes from the French word frere, which means "brother". The church being sexist never came up with a feminine version. Some would suggest a nun is the female form of friar, but this is not true. A nun is the female form of a monk, not a friar.
