If an check engine light does not come on it is a good thing. When your check engine light comes on, it means you need service done on your vehicle.
Sounds like an electrical disconnect somewhere. You can always find a place that can give you an electrical check, but I think it's the ignition switch. Also, check for recalls. There was one recall where a relay has to be put in so that too much current doesn't go back to the ignition switch and melt the thing....
"Check Engine" usually refers to a problem in the emission control system - have vehicle scanned to determine the problem
maybe the batteries are out or maybe your standing next to a electrical thing and it gets radio waves
It all depend if it is vacuum operated or electrical. If it is vacuum check the vacuum line attached to the intake manifold, it might have come loose. If its electrical check the heater control panel.
The best thing I could suggest would be to check the wiring, fuses and switches.
To check the fan sensor on a 98 escort with the key on disconnect the electrical connector to the temperature sesnor. If the fan come on the sensor is all right.

The first thing you should check is the cables themselves. If they have excessive corrosion they cannot send the power to the electrical system. Remove them from the battery and clean them, and the posts, with a Wire Brush. If it's a late model vehicle you can check for power at the Main Fuse, usually located under the hood.
