New bungalows and American Four Square houses were selling new for $3000.00. Cottages were selling for less and larger houses for $5000.00. A $5000.00 house in Hillcrest subdivision (Garfield Ave. and Ridge Ave.) were considered upscale while a $2000.00 house in the Herman Anderson Subdivision (Clifton Ave at Lincoln Ave. west to Central Ave.) was middle class. (Rockford Morning Star newspapers around March 1910) There was a housing and workman shortage at that time. The population in 1910 had grown to 45,401, a 46% increase from the 1900 to (1910 census figures).
