When an engine overheats and is still operated many things can happen all bad. Blown head gaskets, separated radiators and in your case I believe Crank bearing failure because your oil could no longer lubricate the engine and burned onto the engine parts. If you notice your engine getting hot or nearing the red zone on the temp guage shut it down immediately, if you did so then it is possible that the bearing was going bad prior to the overheating and that just took it the rest of the way.
