Fixing it depends on what the speedometer is doing. Chances are its making a funny noise and the needle is bouncing around. This would be due to a damaged or unlubricated speedometer cable. It is a cable that spins around in a plastic sheath connected to the back or your speedometer and to your transmission. Often times removing it and filling it with graphite powder will solve the problem. If its severely damaged you can replace it with a new one. If the cable isn't the problem you may have to replace the speedometer itself.

Then my distributor went out and I replace it and the problem did not come back. ---------- The speedometer cable probably needs to be lubricated with graphite powder. Don't know how to access the cable though. I have the same problem on my 94 si, but strangely, the odometer does seem to be working fine.

Probably a power spike, often when a Caravan is "jumped". Try pushing the odometer/trip odometer button for 4-8 seconds. When it starts running a diagnostic test the speedometer should start jumping around and then reset itself. If it doesn't last, you may have a bad circuit.
