Poet Walt Whitman lived in New York City in 1860. President-elect Abraham Lincoln was making a large number of train stops after his election on his way to Washington DC. New York City was one of those stops but his greeting in New York was not a pleasant one. The mayor of NYC, Fernando Wood did not even come out to greet Lincoln. Whitman was among the crowd that wanted to see Lincoln at his hotel in the city. The date was February 19, 1861. Whitman reported that the crowd was hostile looking. Many ,men there were carrying weapons and stood ready to use them as soon as "break and riot came".Whitman also reported that Lincoln seemed unperturbed by his rude reception and locked his eyes with the crowd for a long moment. This show of fearlessness dissolved much of the tension that permeated the crowd. In the Summer of 1863, in response to the deadly New York City draft riots, Lincoln would send 20,000 troops fresh from Gettysburg to quell the riots with howitzers.
