Since the Cavalier is out of timing, check the timing gears and belt. It sounds like the belt has slipped and is causing the base problem with the car.

Yes Gas does not burn completely in the diesel motor. The unburned gas can then backfire suddenly through your exhaust while driving. I know.
Can be a backfire. When you let up on the throttle suddenly you can get unburned fuel in the exhaust, which then ignites and makes a pop.

Have your mechanic or the dealer check out the sensor. I own a 2001 Santa Fe and it happened to me a couple of times and they changed it for free. It was under Warranty.
It could be the intake manifold gasket, mine was leaking ans setting codes for cylinder 4, while running it will suddenly lose some power and the check engine light will blink and eventually goes steady. It could happen once a day a several times.

Either your battery is run down or the starter has gone bad. Try tapping the selinoid (small cylinder)on the side of the starter.

It backfires because if you are going high speed and then suddenly let off the gas the extra gas that is flowing in has to come out some time another way it backfires is that something on the exhaust or carbeurator is loose or is missing something.
if the switch is lighting up, then the fuse is fine. check the bulbs.
