Check to see if the coolant fan is running. With the engine hot, and running, open the hood and see if the fan is turning. If it's not, then either the fan, temp sensor, relay or wiring is bad.
check the themostat and water pump. if not those, then check the radiator for leaks or cracks. if you notice puddles of coolant anywhere you parked, u have a big problem
The coolant has to be going somewhere. If you don't see puddles on the ground then the coolant is going through the engine via a bad head gasket or cracked head. Look for evidence of coolant muck (mixed oil and coolant) under the engine oil cap and on the engine oil dipstick. Have the cooling system pressure tested asap. The longer you continue to drive this vehicle, the more it is going to cost to repair.
First, where is it leaking. If you smell coolant inside the car, the windows mist up with a "slimy" film, or the front carpet/floorboards are wet, you likely have a bad heater core-the "mini-radiator" under the dash that provides heat and defrost. Does the car leave green puddles where it is parked? It could be leaking from the radiator, hoses, or water pump-you have to look for green (or orange, depending on the type of coolant used) drops or dried residue-a healthy car should have none. If there are no drips or puddles, the car could be leaking coolant into the cylinders via a leaking head gasket. Usually this is accompanied by poor performance and white "puffing" from the tailpipe when the engine idles. Another common cause is a bad radiator cap, if the coolant bottle shows signs of cooland coming out of the overflow drain, a cap with a weak spring could be allowing coolant out of the engine when it shouldn''t. Finally, ensure the engine isn't overheating, as this can cause the overflow condition just mentioned.
AnswerIt could be just about anywhere, but radiators, hoses and water pumps are common candidates. Make sure you use antifreeze, then after it's had a chance to leak a little, examine the underside of the water pump. If the pump is leaking you'll see a trace of green deposits where the coolant has been leaking. If the water pump is ok, examine the radiator. If there is green around the edge of the tanks of the radiator, you need to repair or replace the radiator.Same with the hoses.Check the coolant overflow/reservoir tank - they develop hairline cracks and leak very slowly. Also, a radiator shop would be able to pinpoint your problem with pressure testing the system. Takes all the guesswork out of the problem/fix.
Theres a couple of things that can cause this. First, check ALL the hoses to be sure you dont have a leak. make sure the radiator and reservoir are not leaking. Then you need to check the thermostat. The easiest way i know to do this is run the engine to normal temp, providing you can do this without overheating. there are two hoses coming out of your radiator, one is coolant to the engine, one is the warm coolant back to the radiator. Touch them both, CAREFULLY DO NOT GET BURNT or hurt by any other engine parts such as the engine fan!. if one of them is WAY cooler than the other your thermostat is stuck and you need to replace it. You may have a head gasket blown,if you are losing coolant and do not see any puddles, like this coolant has "mysteriously vanished" get this checked out! another possibility if your heater core is shot, if its not the thermostat, your hoses are all intact and your radiator and reservoir are not leaking, this is likely your problem. OR, you may have a water pump problem, if you have a large puddle under your engine, not near the radiator, get this checked by a professional mechanic ASAP. you can cause serious damage running a car hot.
they live in puddles and they drink the puddles and they eat the mud in the puddles :)
