im certainly not a mechanic but i have a 1997 wrangler tj and i had the same problem try checking the spark plugs make sure the gap is correct or buy a chiltons and diagnose the problem from the way youre plugs look also try a chip my guess is oxygen sensor or even injectors if the injectors arent supplying the fuel the spark plug will definitely show it one more thing clean the intake mod its the device where the air actually goes into the engine from filter mine gets totaly black on occasion i used carb and choke cleaner im totally not sure if its good or bad to use but it makes a world of difference for me good luck
