It may indicate that the vent from your bathroom to the outside either does not exist or is plugged. When water from the washer courses through the Plumbing, it shoves sewer smelling air back up the pipes into your bathroom as there is no outlet for the air - if the vent is plugged or non-existent.

If you live in Canada, try using Shell Busey's home formula through an empty load on the washer. Sometimes the smell emanates from the line between the washer and the drain. You could also try putting something down the washer drain or laundry tub to ease the odour.
