could happen if the thermostat is not opening, or if there's a pressure leak in the cooling system, insufficient cooling fluid, or a bad water-pump, a kink in a hose or blockage in the cooling-system. Anything that keeps the coolant from flowing in and out of the block or causes a loss of pressure. It isn't enough to just have coolant in the system, the sysem has to hold a head of steam as well. Otherwise the water will just get hot and blow out of the system.
