The 1996 ( most other model years ) Jeep Cherokee has either the DANA 35 rear axle or the Chrysler 8.25 rear axle. ABS brakes are optional with the Dana 35 . The Chrysler 8.25 never had ABS. The front axle is the DANA 30.
It is a Chrysler built axle with a ring gear diameter of 9.25 inches.
Front would be a Dana 30 and the rear is either a Dana 35 or Chrysler 8.25.

It is called a 42le

Yes.
There is a small C-Clip on the end of the Axle Shaft (inside of the differential) that holds the axle in place. This clip may have been busted or fell off the end of the axle shaft.
If it's automatic, it is most likely a non ABS Chrysler 8.25 axle with 3.55 gears.
