the battery could have a dead cell, this could cause it to not charge. Have the battery tested to be sure.
usually that the battery isn't taking a charge. have the alternator checked, many shops will test the charging system for free
This indicates a no-charge situation. Most likely the alternator is bad.
An alternator can charge normally but can still drain a battery if the diode(s) are defective. Try this: remove the(red) positive cable from the back of the alternator and then touch it to the post that you removed it from. Remember, this is hot so don't touch it to anything else. If it sparks this indicates the alternator is pulling current, and is bad.
A battery charges nothing it accepts a charge from the alternator.
You can have the alternator tested free of charge at just about any major auto parts store. By the way, a bad alternator will not "discharge" a battery - the alternator's function is to provide the charge to the battery. If the alternator is faulty, then it is not providing the charge necessary to keep other components from discharging the battery. I had the alternator tested and it was charging. If the alternator has a bad diode, it will discharge the battery. I replaced the alternator and everything is fine.
Charge the battery.
older cars had a generator ,not an alternator, but you can always use a battery charger to charge a battery
Charge it, replace it,test the alternator,Charge it, replace it,test the alternator,
I have a 2.0 1995 Mercury mystique the battery charge light was on no output on old alternator. Replaced alternator No output from new alternator "charge light out" (wiggle test wires& re-check wires) at alternator *still no output* is there a fuse that could be the problem or just another bad alternator... I would check the alternator plug before getting another alternator, it may be bad. And is a lot cheaper to replace.
put in new alternator but it will not charge battery. alternator was tested and found to be good. why wont it charge the battery?
My advice is to charge the battery with a battery charger before starting the engine. You will be putting a heavy load on the alternator if you allow it to charge a dead battery. This could damage the alternator.
That is the purpose of an alternator. The keep the battery charged and to run all the electrics on the vehicle. However it is never a good idea to allow the alternator to charge a dead battery. This will put a strain on the alternator and may damage it.
