There could be many many many causes for this as this is a very general question. Best thing to do would be to go get the code read at your local auto parts store. Now if your not able to repair it yourself you would be better off to take it to a mechanic and get the code read there

The check engine light indicates that the computer has detected a "fault". Use a code scanner to find out what the computer has detected, that is PROBABLY the reason the engine is running poorly.

The check engine light comes on and stays on when a problem is detected by the self diagnosis system of your vehicle. Generally, a check engine light is lit when there is a problem in the emissions or somthing that is affecting the effectiveness of the emissions. If the check engine light is flashing a misfire has been detected

You can but the check engine light will remain on and it won't pass an emissions test.

under the hood, passenger side, between the engine and the fire wall. Look down.

There are pages and pages of things that can cause a check engine light. You need to have it checked with a scantool. Then the code can be diagnosed and repaired.

Check the ignition coil on the Marquis. Check the crank sensor as well. One of these is probably bad.

Check to insure that the engine coolant is full and the thermostat is not stuck. Without the heated fluid from the engine the heater will always blow cold air.

First check spark, if you have, then check the fuel pump for pressure.

The Check Engine Light is on because the ECU has detected a problem with the emissions system on the engine. There are HUNDREDS of things that can cause the Check Engine Light to stay on. Try disconnecting the Battery Cables. This should reset the Computer (Or used to) - if the light comes back then I'd say you have a bad sensor somewhere. You'd have to go to an Auto Parts Store that has a scanner to get the code(s) that the computer is sending to find the real problem.

The EGR valve on the 2001 Mercury Mountaineer is located on the engine block just to the left of the intake manifold. The damaged valve will cause the check engine light to flash.

If your check engine light is blinking that means a cylinder misfire has been detected Drive in a moderate fashion ( no fast acceleration / decelleration ) and have the vehicle scanned for any trouble code(s) to diagnose and repair the problem

Vacuum check valves are usually located close to the vacuum source.

Several things need to be checked if a 1999 Mercury Grand Marquis is hesitating when accelerating. Does the hesitation only last a few seconds until the car is slightly warm? Do you hear a poping noice from the engine compartment? Is the check engine light on ? I have had similar problems and this type of problem is typically caused by air or fuel problems. 1999 Mercury Grand Marquis are fuel injected and any vaccume leaks can cause these type of problems. I would check all hoses to make sure they are secure. I would check the PVC valvs, I will check to make sure none of the hoses are blocked, I would check the idle air control valve and its passage, I would check the EGR valve and its passage, I would check the throttle body and bypass valve as all of these items can be gunked with carbon deposits. This should be a good beginning point but the answers to my questions will really help to narrow down the issue.
