The evaporator unit may have frozen up. During periods of heavy use, especially when the humidity is high, the evaporator unit may begin to form ice. If the compressor is running a lot, the ice may not melt between running periods, causing ice to build up. The ice insulates the coolant from the air, so the coolant does not evaporate properly, which causes the compressor to shut off when it tries to compress the fluid. Try shutting the air conditioner off for 30-40 minutes, with the fan running. Then, restart.
