It's called water hammer. It's caused when a valve is sudden opened or closed. It's usually happens with fixtures that draw large amounts of water like washing machines. You can install water hammer arrestors near the fixtures that are causing the problems.
They were not strapped properly when installed.
Pipe isn't properly fastened to keep it from knocking. An anti-hammer arrester installed in cold water line should help eliminate knocking. The knocking caused by sudden burst of water pressure in line when a valve or faucet is opened.

Singing water pipes can be caused by air that is trapped in the pipes. The air can cause a whistling or singing sound, or it can cause the pipes to knock or rattle.

What would cause the pipes to rattle whenever the hot water recirculating pump is running?

I don't even know what a recirculating pump does but when fast moving water hits a corner or elbow it has a force that can move the pipe. Most likely the pipes need a bit more tie downs. Hopefully the pipes aren't in the walls. Get someone to cut the water on and you go hunt the rattle.

When the steam hits colder piping it turns to condensate and the steam hitting the water (condensate) produces hydraulic shock waves.

What are noisy water pipes typically caused by?

A common cause of pipe noise in a home is when the pipes vibrate or rattle inside the walls. When the home was built, the plumber is supposed to install strapping around the pipe where it enters the studs in the wall or travels through the floor to prevent this. If this strapping was not secured and has fallen off (or never there to begin with) this will cause the pipe to rattle or vibrate when the water is turned on or off and cause the noise you are hearing. I don't think it is cause for alarm, but it definitely is annoying. Repairing this problem could be simple if the noise can be pin pointed. A licensed plumber should be contacted regardless.

What would cause your pipes to rattle when no water is being used anywhere in the house?

Fluctuations in city water pressure. Sometimes this is a bad toilet ballcock. Test by turning water off to one toilet at a time to see if it stops.

What would cause a 10-year old sump pump to begin to intermittently rattle the pipes after it runs?

It could be sucking a little air and if the pipe is not tied down tight it would attempt to move as the air bubble worked through. Make certain that the pipes are fastened securely and that your check-valve is not letting all of the water drain out of the pipe.
