If a persons epiglottis is not working properly, there are several different things that can happen. You can get acid reflux, trouble swallowing, and your food could go to the wrong place when you eat.
It depends on where the damage is and how much damage there is. Some problems can be corrected with medications or surgery. If the damage is too severe some patients have to have a transplant or there is nothing that can be done for the patient. To give a true answer more information is needed.
