If the two intestines were as long as the small intestine currently is, your stool would be excruciatingly dry. The large intestine draws water from the stool, and if it was over four times longer than it now is, you'd really be in trouble.

It's not the best deal in the world, but it is something that can be lived with and just requires "management" on the part of an individual who has, due to accident or disease, lost the large or a large portion of the large intestine.
