Cell membranes are vital because they control what enters and leaves the cell. If we did not have a cell membrane, we would not be able to regulate our cell contents at all and we would be starved of oxygen (and food) and carbon dioxide would also build up, killing us quickly.

Without a semipermeable membrane between the outside and the inside of a cell, letting in some substances and keeping out others, you do not have what we define as a cell.

The cell membrane acts like a gate, it regulates what goes in and out of the cell. Without a cell membrane, anything would be able to get in and out of the cell, like bacteria.
