If she ate anything, she would've had to stay in the underworld. This happened when she ate a pomegranate which had three seeds. Therefore, she would have to stay in the underworld for three seasons out of four.
Once she ate the food of the underworld, she would be forced to stay there.
Hades' wife Persephone was tricked into marrying him. When she fell into a hole that led to the underworld, she remembered what her mother (Demeter, goddess of agriculture) had told her; never eat anything in the underworld. When Demeter couldn't find her daughter, she was crestfallen and depressed, searching for Persephone each day. Finally after a few months, Hades hated to see Persephone look so sad, so he offered her a deal; if she ate 3 - 4 pomegranate seeds, he would let her go. Forgetting what her mother told her, Persephone agreed to the deal. When Hades let Persephone out of the underworld, Demeter was rejoicing with glee until Persephone told her about the seeds. Demeter immediately changed from happiness to sadness, because since Persephone ate the 4 seeds, she would have to live as Hades' wife in the underworld for 4 months. This Greek tale explains why we have the season of winter. Hope this helped! ~Max
Hades stole Persephone for his wife one day. He kept her in the Underworld for 3 days, but eventually the gods found out and they tried to get him to free her. Hades made a deal with them and said that if Persephone had eaten anything during her stay, she would have to remain with him forever as his Queen. It turns out that Persephone ate 3 pomegranite seeds while in the Underworld, but she begged Hades to let her go. So, he decided that she would stay with him for 6 months every year, and for the remaining 6 months, she would return to the surface to live with her mother. :)
Hades is the Lord of the Underworld, though not death itself. Without him, the Underworld would be in chaos because there would be no one to watch over it and keep order. He kidnapped Persephone, and her mother, Demeter, refused to let the earth grow, so he also caused winter. The seasons only change if Persephone is coming back from the underworld and when she is going back to the underworld.
Demeter, her mother, demanded it: or no living thing would grow. Now half the time Persephone is in the Underworld it is winter, and when she returns it is spring.
As Queen Persephone of the Underworld, and goddess of the spring - a daughter of Zeus and Demeter, and wife of Hades - there is not much anyone mortal or immortal would not grant her. A goddesses powers are not limited to human imagination.

The Abduction of Persephone: Persephone was above ground picking flowers in the spring, and helping the plants grow. Many desired Persephone, for she was one of the most beautiful goddesses in the history of Greek Myths. But, Hades wanted her more than anyone else, so he decided to capture her and bring her down to the underworld. This was known as the Abduction of Persephone, or The Rape of Persephone. While being in the underworld, Persephone didn't eat anything, except a few pomegranate seeds, which Hades had given to her to symbolize their love (even though Persephone hated him). Demeter and Zeus pleaded for Hades to let Persephone go, and he agreed, but only if she hadn't eaten anything in the underworld. As a deal, Hades said Persephone would stay down in the underworld for 1/2 of the year, and be above ground for 1/2 of a year.
