If the vice-president had to assume the office, he would be sworn in as President of the United States and would be called "Mr. President" from that time on.
(I doubt that he would hear your call.) He would be called the late president for a reasonable period of time after his death and then just by his name or President whatever.
Washington set the tone on what he wanted to be called. He knew that whatever it was every president would be called that so he said that Mr. President was the proper term.

If the person is the president of a corporation which is called an industrial empire, he would probably not like to be called an emperor. If the person is a dictator who made himself emperor as well as president, I suppose you could call him an emperor. Emperor is usually a title applied to king-like figures. President usually indicates an elected leader. The two titles are contradictory.
