There will be a loud knocking and rattling. The engine will not go far before it is destroyed. If in doubt chat the system has adequate oil pressure.

It may be your catalytic converter. Ours did the same thing with an automatic transmission. We sometimes thought it was the transmission, then we received a recall on the converter. Took it in to be replaced, and no more rattling.
could be the sound of the air being drawn in that's different ie carb'd systems with no airbox or if they are flat side carburettors, the rattling sound alone is enough to tell you its got flatsides or the engine is damaged.

lifters are beginning to go. timing chain (if vehicle is equiped) may be coming loose. and or exhaust pieces are loose.
Well without further analysis or information, a short answer would be that your engine is BROKEN.
