For people born there it is home. It is a beautiful country, so many others choose to live there because of its beauty. Some may not be Irish themselves, but have Irish ancestors and wish to visit or live in Ireland. The weather is not always good, but Ireland does not get the extremes of heat or cold or severe storms that other countries get, so it is safe to live in. People may not like the rain, but it is the rain that gives Ireland its green look and natural beauty. Ireland is not prone to natural disasters such as earthquakes or volcanoes. It is close to the mainland of Europe and a good base to travel from. It is an English-speaking country which is an international language. Ireland has great culture like in its music, books, poetry, dance, sport etc. Irish people are welcoming and friendly and there is a very easy-going nature in the country, which is nice. So for all of these and many other reasons, Ireland is a country that a lot of people like to live in or at least visit.

Why doesn't Ireland change it's name to the United Counties?

There is no reason for Ireland to change its name. Ireland has been the name for a long time and a name like "United Counties" would make no sense and leave people asking "Where is that?" to which the answer would be given "It is Ireland." So it is best to leave it as Ireland.

How many people watch the Ireland Gaelic final?

That is difficult to answer. Croke Park, where the final is played, has a capacity of 82,300. An All-Ireland final could have well over 60% of a TV audience share in Ireland. So that would be hundreds of thousands of people. That is just the figures from within Ireland. All around the world Irish people and others, would be watching the final on TV. So the real numbers would run into millions of people. On top of that you would have radio listeners in Ireland and worldwide and people getting it through the internet. So that would make those watching or listening to it huge.

Did any one in Ireland ever actually want to be united with the united kingdom?

Yes and some still want that to be the case. That is the whole basis for the problems in Ireland and why we have Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland in existence now. The majority in Northern Ireland did not want to be separate to the United Kingdom. Many people in Northern Ireland do not want that. In the same way there would be some in the Republic of Ireland that would favour Ireland being fully in the United Kingdom, though it would be a small amount. It is predominantly people who live in Northern Ireland that would hold that view, known as Loyalists or Unionists. The Nationalist or Republicans, who make up a large amount of the population in Northern Ireland, though still a minority overall, want a fully united Ireland free of the United Kingdom. This difference of opinion, mixed in with other social issues, led to the conflicts in Northern Ireland since it came into being, most notably from the lat 1960s to the early 1990s.

Why Ireland wants indpendence?

Because Irish people want to be able to make their own decisions on how they live their life's and not be ruled by a foreign nation. Ireland was a free nation with their own high kings before the English invaded and ruled for 800 years and discriminated against the Irish people. Ireland wanted independence so that Ireland could be ruled by the Irish.
