Think it is just that the pilot light is lighting the main burner, which makes a booming sound.
Disabling the ignition or disconnecting the gas source is a good start.
Yes, when the pilot light is not lit. No spray.
It uses a sparker to light the pilot. The same as on many gas BBQ grills.
To me it sounds like your pilot light on the fireplace is out. That could happen from a strong wind coming down the chimney or a strong breeze in the house from a fan. Check your pilot light and be sure to have the gas off before lighting the pilot light if it is out.
You may have a faulty thermostat that isn't closing when heat is called for. Also a faulty gas valve could be the problem. Also, be sure that the gas valve isn't in the "Pilot" position. This is the position you turn the gas valve to when lighting thepilot light. If your pilot light isn't staying on after being lit, then you may have a bad thermocouple.
Thermocouple. Keep pilot knob depressed for 30 seconds after lighting pilot.
Gas not turned on to water heater. Gas valve on water heater not set to pilot setting. Faulty gas valve. Igniter for lighting pilot not working.
Just a guess- but most have a sensor known as a thermocouple. This detects the heat of the flame of the pilot light, and keeps gas from flowing if the pilot light is not lit. check that your pilot light (a very small flame) is burning, and that the flame heats a small metal tube- about as big as a wooden match. If pilot is out, get it lit, and let burn for 5 minutes, and try lighting fireplace. If it still will not stay lit, the thermocouple may need replacement- they DO wear out. Check with your local gas appliance repair service. While they are fixing it, have them show you correct lighting process.
How do I light pilot light on furnace
Pilot light is a safety item; to light the pilot, you need to heat up an internal thermocouple; When hot enough, thermocouple will hold open the gas valve on pilot light. If the pilot shuts off when you release the "button", either (1) you did not hold it in long enough & heat up thermocouple sufficiently -OR- (2) the thermocouple has gone bad. Replacements are standardized, easy to find, and well under $10 each, but, sometimes difficult to install.
I believe it is called the "pilot light"
