That makes the marriage invalid, and Count Olaf can't get their money. Count Olaf shuts off all the lights in the theater and escapes in his black car. The movie is a little different, because Count Olaf gets captured in that, and it has the 2nd and 3rd book in it (a.k.a. The Reptile Room and The Wide Window).

Violet, Klaus and Sunny Baudelaire find their home burnt to black and their parents dead. So they have to go to a stranger but a relative called Count Olaf. In their life, he tries to kill the orphans with no succes. Later on in the book, Count Olaf asks the orphans to be in his play called 'The Marvellous Marrige'. Violet says yes, and Klaus finds that the wedding in the play will be real! Count Olaf wants to marry Violet to get to the Baudelaire fortune, but his plans do not work. Now, Violet was right handed, and she signed the certificate with her left. Justice Strauss (neighbour of Count Olaf) had not clue, and she said "If the bride signs with her left hand, the wedding is not official". So once again, Count Olaf's plans were ruined. The orphans wanted to live with Justice Strauss, but Mr Poe (bank manager) said they had to liven with a relative. Count Olaf and his acting group got away in a car, and then Mr Poe takes the children to another relative, just who will that be? I know, it is Uncle Monty! Find out in The Reptile Room

There is a lot of internal conflict. The siblings are trying to protect themselves and find happiness, but their parents have been murdered, and all the other people that they get to know and like get killed as well. Every time they start to have a little bit of hope, the same evil keeps coming at them. They are children, and most adults don't take their fears seriously, so they have to protect themselves and each other.
