What would you do if you found messages on your girlfriend's phone from his ex saying they should just be friends?

I would think that it meant that they were doing something more then "being friends" and he wanted to end it. If he knows about you and her he may not want to do that behind your back or he may be afraid that they would get caught. If he doesn't know about you and her then he wouldn't really be the one to blame. You could be completely honest to her and tell her what you found and ask her what she has to say about it. Or if you're brave enough you could just go ahead and call him. Ask him if they did anything you should know about. Either way, if you feel that you really need to know you won't be happy until you talk to one of them about it.
