You don't - if you want to continue to be mates with your best mate then I believe it is only proper to leave that idea alone - really why would you want to hurt your friend and possibly hurt yourself in the long run when/if you get rejected. Let's face it if he wanted to be with you or had any interest he would have came to you by now.
