Wash the wound well with soap and water, and get immediate medical attention.

Make every effort to have someone safely corral or kill the animal so the animal can be examined to verify it has rabies.

The treatment is not as horrific as in the olden days, when injections had to be made into the abdominal cavity, but it does entail a series of vaccine injections, started as soon as possible. If the animal tests show the animal is not rabid, you need only have the first couple of shots.

If you are bitten by a rabid animal and do not get immediate medical attention, death is almost certain.
