I am not an expert but the engine has absolutely, positively, nothing to do with 4wd. It is the transmission. In fact, it is really a transfer case that controls the 4wd.
Looking at the picture in my Haynes repair manual it looks like the blower motor resistor is in the engine compartment mounted just to the right of your blower motor when looking from the front of the Explorer - Helpfull

if you can't change the RPM of the motor, you have to change the gearing of the chain drive. Fit a smaller sprocket to the motor to slow the conveyor down, or a bigger to speed it up.
