I think the 2002 is the same as the 1996 that I'm way too farmiliar with? The water pump is an aluminum housing but the v6 block is steel (and prone to rusting) The 2 metals react on each other (Dielectric)... The coolant only helps the process along enhancing the battery like action. The steel rusts and the scale flakes off into the coolant, then the rust grit basicaly sandblasts the alum housing on the water pump to the point the impeller doesn't move the water. Then the small air hole in the housing that allows the impeller to break vacume allows the water to simply run out. Related: The Alum particles and the steel particles freely move through the system plugging the radiator until it is degraded and causes overheating. This also plugs the heater core in the cab so it doesn't work as well. I miss the days that a blown hose was the normal problem. I've helped al least 3 other Dakota owners with the same issue and replaced min alone 3-4 times before I gave the Truck to charity and bought a Ram instead.
