When you have to leave, it is most common to grab a kit to hold you over for 72 hours. You will want some other basics, but your main supplies will last three days. That gives you time to find more, but enough to get you out of the area.

Some common items:

• Any forms of ID, licenses, insurance, or certificates you might need
• Pocketknife and a sharpening stone
• Non perishable foods. Dried foods are much lighter than canned in case you need to be on foot. Crackers, dried meats, and dried fruits will get most of the food groups in there for you.
• Water, and if possible, a way to sanitize more water. Powdered electrolytes like Gatorade
• Flashlight and batteries. It is better to go with a smaller one that takes AA or AAA batteries if you don't have much space
• Shelter, such as a tarp. Look up how to use it ahead of time.
• Medications that you are required to have
• Cash
• Waterproof matches
• Notepad and pencil
• Weather radio
• Key ring can opener, small hand tools, like a hammer. Tools like a Leatherman are multi-functional
• Maps of your area
• Basic first aid supplies
• Actual closed shoes or boots, not sandals. Go with leather if possible. Water seal them ahead of time if possible.
• Socks are more important than a large variety of clothes
• A wad of dryer lint for starting fires (can be smashed down small), or other fire starter for when things are damp
• A blanket. Wool is itchy, but will keep you warm even if it is wet
• Duct Tape, bungee cords, rope, clothesline or paracord
• Sunblock and bug repellant
• Poncho
• Mess kit, minimal cooking items
• If you have room and are in the right area, a collapsable fishing pole and small tin of tackle
