The US was never part of the british empire, in the 18th century Britain had 13 colonies in the North American region, however it wasn't until the American war of independence that North America adopted the name the USA in reference to its recently united colonies. Thanks

North and South Carolina were originally established as Carolina in 1629, but separated in 1729. And Maine was part of Massachusetts until 1820.

The 13 colonies never became a literal state. I'm not sure when they all became their own states, but in 1776, the Declaration of Independence was signed.
