The Arizona Cardinals are the oldest continuously run professional football team in the United States. In 1920 the Chicago Cardinals became charter members of the American Professional Football League, the NFL's predecessor. The Cardinals were originally formed in 1898 by Chicago's Morgan Athletic Club. The team played out of Normal Park on Racine Avenue in Chicago, and were known as the Racine Normals. In 1920 the team bought some used football uniforms that were cardinal red, and the team became known as the Racine Cardinals. When the National Football League was formed in 1920, the Cardinals were one of the original teams. Later they became the Chicago Cardinals in order to avoid confusion with a National Football League franchise that had been awarded to Racine, Wisconsin.

The franchise was moved to St Louis, where the Cardinals played from 1960 to 1987, and then to Arizona. From 1988 to 1993 they were known as the Phoenix Cardinals. Since 1994 they have been the Arizona Cardinals.

The Chicago Cardinals won their only National Football League championship game in 1947. Although there was no NFL championship game in 1925, the Cardinals were awarded the championship by a league decision that remains controversial to this day.

Some pundits claim that the Cardinals are the oldest continually operating professional football team in the USA. A closer look indicates that the club was an amateur organization until at least the end of World War I. Furthermore, the team disbanded in 1906 and was not reorganized until 1913. In addition, the team was forced to suspend operations in 1918 for two reasons: the United States' involvement in World War I, and the worldwide flu epidemic.

The Cardinals, however, are mere babes in arms compared with two teams in the Canadian Football League. The Toronto Argonauts were formed in 1872. The Hamilton Tiger-Cats are an amalgamation of three Hamilton area teams: Hamilton Alerts, Hamilton Tigers, and Hamilton Wildcats. The modern-day Tiger-Cats can trace their existence back to 1869.
