Actually Hawaii is rarely hit by a hurricane. The danger of Hawaii getting hit by a hurricane any single year is very low.
They are rare because Hawaii is small and also it has colder water. However, it does have warm water. But the main reason why are hurricanes in Hawaii are relatively rare because of the subtropical ridge. This is an invisible layer in the Earth's atmosphere. It protects Hawaii from direct hits. Every time a hurricane gets near Hawaii. It will weaken it or change directions. However, every year there are periods during which this ridge breaks down temporarily. That usually occurs in association with a low pressure system passing north of Hawaii, which can cause tropical cyclones to curve northward toward Hawaii and approach from the south. It happends in November but also in September. In fact, the most powerful hurricane to hit Hawaii was in September 11, 1992 when Hurricane Iniki slammed into Kaua'i as a Category 4, packing winds of 140 mph with gust up to 160 mph. It caused $1.5-1.8 billion dollars in damage. It was the first hurricane to hit Hawaii since Hurricane Iwa and was the first major hurricane since Hurricane Dot. In the last 50 years only 5 hurricanes have a major impact on the islands! It's now nearly 18 years since 1992's Hurricane Iniki. The duration between the dates of Hurricane Dot and Hurricane Iwa is 23 years. Hurricane Dot hit Hawaii in 1959 and Hurricane Iwa it Hawaii in 1982. Between those years is really a long time. Currently, let's see if we can reach up to 25-30 years without a hit from a hurricane. Kaua'i has been hit by a hurricane more often then any other islands, for an unknown reason. No hurricanes hit Hawaii since Iniki. Most recently, there are a few close calls. Rarely that hurricanes could become monsters when they come to the Central Pacific. In 1994, Hurricane John passed safely south of the islands as a Category 5, packing winds of 175 mph! So far Hawaii has been spared but it could eventually will be it's greatest natural disaster, for example: a hurricane hitting a highly populated island like Oahu. The estimated damage of a Iniki-like hurricane hitting Oahu will be $25 billion dollars. There will be also mass evacuations.
