Over 200 caseses of barbed wire were sold in the first year
Joseph F. Gidden was born in New York on Jan. 18, 1812. He invented barbed wire in 1873 and was granted the patent on Nov. 24, 1874. After a three year battle over the patent, which he eventually won, Gidden became known as the "Father of Barbed Wire".
Really they're not barbed wire but more like knots. Each knot on the bar represents 1 year of exemplary service without any offenses like a Captain's mast or Court Marshals.
They could no longer have their cattle on the open range. They had to confine their animals to their properties and find ways to keep them there and graze them there year after year without loosing the land to desertification.
Before the invention of barbed wire, a rancher's cattle just went all over the land, and during roundup time, you had to go find them. Also, someone driving cattle could simply cut across a person's land in order to get to market. With the invention of barbed wire, roundups becanme easier, and "Line houses" were set up along the fences of some larger ranches, in order to make sure the cattle were in good health year round. The upside/downside (depending on who you ask) was that it kept cattle drivers from cutting across property, making them go aroound, thus lengthening their travel time.
