Aotearoa is a descriptor name, "Land of the Long White Cloud", or so myth would tell us.In the (probably apocryphal) myth of the discovery of Aotearoa by legendary Polynesian explorer, Kupe, he names the land (North Island in some versions, South Island in others) he and his crew find after the long stretch of white cloud they see which they take as a sign that there is land beneath it (In some versions it is Kupe's wife who names it Aotearoa).
Kupe, or one of his party, may have named the North Island of New Zealand Aotearoa on his early visit. The dating of this visit is a little indeterminate, for many iwi claim alliance, and the possibility of children bearing the name of a famous figure is non-zero.
