Drinking: 18 Driving: 18
In the eyes of the law, an 18 year old is an adult and has all the rights of an adult with the exception of drinking alcohol.
The Minimum Drinking Age Act of 1984 was a federal law that boosted the drinking age from 18 to 21.
1973 - this isn't right. I only know NSW & Qld, but in my lifetime there wasn't an Australia wide drinking age. I was born in 1952 and legally drinking in 1970 in NSW, aged 18. Qld was 21 at that time. My father was born 1921 and was also legally drinking at age 18 in NSW.
1979
They are not lowering the drinking age to 18. The minimum purchase and drinking age is a state law. Each individual U.S. state establishes by law the minimum age at which an individual may purchase alcoholic beverages. The U.S. Government passed the National Minimum Drinking Age Act on July 17, 1984. This did not change the drinking age. However, it forced the individual states to establish the minimum drinking age as 21 or lose 10% of their federal highway funding. The minimum drinking age is 21 in all 50 U.S. states.
Early 1970s.
In the middle 1970's there was a Federal law that made it legal for 18 year olds to drink anywhere in the country. This law lasted for about two years and then it was discovered that the sudden increase in highway fatalities was directly attributable to 18-21 year old alchohol consumption. The law was repealed. I was legally able to drink in Texas in the 4 years I was in college there from 1976 to 1980. On September 1, 1981, the drinking age in Texas was raised from 18 to 19, with no "grandfather clause." In 1984, in compliance with a federal mandate, it was raised to 21.
In 1987, Louisiana enacted a law raising the minimum drinking age from 18 to 21 to comply with the National Minimum Drinking Age Act of 1984. Failure to comply with the act would have stripped the state of federal funding for highways.
