The United States Congress could not touch the slave trade until 1808, as stated in the U.S. Constitution's Slave Trade Clause. This clause prohibited Congress from banning the importation of slaves until that year.

In 1826 a slave [Isabella] sued for her freedom: it was granted in 1828, ending slavery. She began a search for the truth concerning her son who had been sold off when he was 2 years of age. Because of this journey she became known as Sojourner Truth. One of several stories concerning the end of slavery in New York.
