True ecumenism began at the tower of babel referred to in the bible in Genesis Chapter 11 where all the people of the earth united to build a tower to reach heaven. Of course, there was no church, but the idea of ecumenism is religious unity and cooperation. The tower of Babel was built somewhere between 1757 to 1996 years after creation. So the years would be 1757 to 1996 BC.

Nicolaus Ludwig, Count von Zinzendorf,(1700-1760) was the first person to use the word "ecumenical" through his pioneering efforts to unite all Christians, regardless of denominational labels, into a "Church of God in the Spirit".

There was an ecumenical movement among Protestant groups in the late 1800's aimed at achieving universal Christian unity through international or interdenominational organizations. The Roman Catholic Church has been heavily involved in the ecumenical movement since the Second Vatican Council (1961-1965).
