The first flag of Canada was the Red Ensign with a badge in the fly. That badge showed the arms of the 4 original provinces, ca 1869. The badge was redesigned in 1921 because flagmakers kept adding arms to the original badge each time a new province joined the Confederation even though there was no official sanction for this practice (they might have got the idea from their neighbors to the south who kept adding stars for new states.) The Red Ensign with the 1921 badge was used as Canada's de facto national flag until 1965 when the Maple Leaf Flag was adopted.
